Got a Migraine? Here, take some Botox!?!?
And you thought that Botox was only used to reduce facial wrinkles. Doctors may start prescribing Botox as a migraine reliever in the future. A study that was published in the Archives of Dermatology shows that 18 people who had migraines once a day and who were on Botox show a dramatic decrease in migraines. They claimed that they only had one migraine in seven days. Migraine sufferers know that this type of relief can be life changing.
There is some controversy though because medical trials have reported inconsistent data on how much Botox helps. I would have to agree with those researchers because a sample size of 18 is quite small. Any statistician knows that to get an accurate measurement on a population you need a large sample size. Typically a sample size of 100 or more would be good.
Allergan Inc., who helped funded the study along with the the National Institutes of Health, is putting some pressure on the Food and Drug Administration to market Botox as a treatment for chronic migraines. One spokeswoman of Allergan Inc., Crystal Muilenburg, said that there about 3 million Americans who suffer from migraines.
I think Allergan Inc. is reaching for a solution in order to make more money but I guess we will have to wait and see how the Food and Drug Administration will respond. What do you think?
